White House economists say the Bureau of Labor Statistics needs a new perspective as U.S. employment data sparks controversy.
[Block Rhythm] On August 2, it was reported that senior White House economist Stephen Miran stated that an important economic statistical agency needs a "new perspective," but he did not repeat President Trump’s claim about political manipulation of the employment data released on Friday. Trump ordered the dismissal of the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (the agency that publishes the US Non-farm Payrolls (NFP)) on Friday, after he claimed without evidence that the disappointing employment data was "manipulated." The agency later confirmed that its head, Erika McEntarfer, was dismissed, and her deputy, William Wiatrowski, will serve as acting head.
The July employment report released earlier on Friday showed that only 73,000 jobs were added last month. The Labor Department also announced significant data revisions, indicating that the number of jobs was a total of 258,000 less than previously thought. This is the second-largest downward revision over two months on record, second only to the revisions during the pandemic.
Trump previously stated: "(Non-farm) employment data is being manipulated, with the aim of embarrassing Republicans and me – just like before and after the 2024 presidential election."
